There is no harder time for dieting than the winter time holiday season. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, many people attend dozens of parties, visits with family and other gatherings. Trays of cookies, treats and other snacks are everywhere, tempting you away from the healthier options you've been using to fortify your body. Lots of people just give in to the idea that it's better to give up on dieting and living a healthy lifestyle during the holidays. That's one reason New Year's resolutions to lose weight are so common -to make up for the holiday binging. Fortunately, this isn't your only or your best choice. To help you stick with your weight loss plan all through the holidays, we've collected some practical and effective tips you should try.

Devote some extra time to your workouts. If you do this, you'll be able to consume extra calories without paying for it. You probably won't be able to say "no" to all of the temptations. If you burn off calories at the gym (or wherever you work out), those holiday calories won't have to cause you to pack on extra pounds. Even if your schedule is full, you can find creative ways to burn off calories, whether it's taking stairs instead of the elevator or taking a walk during your lunch break. If you're pressed for time, investigate some exercise tools and programs that can be convenient to fit it whenever possible.

In between all those holiday meals and parties, eat as healthy as you can. This doesn't mean depriving yourself of calories. Do not restrict your calorie intake during mealtimes to "make room" for new calories. Healthy foods that satisfy you can help keep your energy levels up and not make you feel too hungry when you see all those holiday temptations. When you take this precaution with the meals you can control, you won't feel as guilty for indulging during the holiday parties.

You need to use healthy ingredients when you cook. Most people know that the foods they eat at holiday times, are full of fats, and full of sugar, plus a lot of real butter, and these are the foods that should be avoided. There is no rule that says holiday food needs to be thick and rich and heavy. You can make all of the same dishes you love but in healthier ways and they will still taste just as good. Do some research to see if you can't come up with the healthiest ways possible to make the foods you love and you won't have to worry about those extra holiday pounds quite as fretfully.

Keeping your weight under control during the holiday season takes some effort, but it's certainly possible. You should start by not resigning yourself to putting on weight this time of year, as so many people do. You can stick to your diet, keep up your weight loss regimen and stay healthy -even while sometimes indulging in tasty treats and decadent holiday meals.
