Guidelines for using the Neti Pot. Using the Neti Pot is notably simpler than it may appear. The principle is you create a warm saline solution (boiled or distilled only!) and allow it to go into one nostril, and then work its way through the nasal channel and sinuses, until it eventually exits through your other nostril. While the solution works its way through, the warm water will help to free up any debris which can become lodged in the many twists and turns of your nasal cavities, whilst the salt sanitizes and helps fight infections.

For the water itself you should use boiled plain faucet water or even better sterilized water, but boiled plain faucet water is fine. You'll then need some non ionised salt. This is normally referred to as ‘Sea Salt’ which often typically large chunks of a raw salt when compared to regular table salt which is very fine and processed. A lot of people also like to include a modest amount of Bicarbonate soda to temper the solution, myself I just use salt, however you may find Bicarbonate works for you.

Next, before we do anything more more it is essential to sanitize your Neti Pot.First give it an effective scrub as you would any normal kitchen utensil, however if using dish washing detergent make sure that it’s rinsed off well! Upon having cleaned it in the convention way, it is then time to sterilise and this can be done in one of 3 ways:

The initial one is to place it into a Microwave oven in exactly the same as you would for any baby’s bottle, but please be aware that you may need to be careful when using the plastic models, if you do it for no more then 1.5 minutes you should be fine and not cause any damage, but monitor the event to be certain for the initial few times.

The second is to place the neti pot into some boiling water, but be careful to never scold yourself. Use some thongs if need be.

The third is to use a newborn bottle sterilizing product.

As for the temperature it needs to be much like the body and that is 98.6°F (37°C) - Basically Luke warm, so not to cold, but certainly not too hot.

Once in your sterilised pot provide it with a stir and you’re good to go.

If it’s your first attempt its worth acquiring a towel draped over your neck just to catch any solution that you spill.

Lean forward over a hand basin or large bowl and tilt the head upwards looking straight ahead. Position the end of the Pots spout into the nostril applying enough pressure so that it ‘seals’ the spout on your nose.

Start to breath in a relaxed way through your mouth and after that tilt top of your head sideways so that the spout and pot is above your upward faced cheek. Carry on and breathe via the mouth the whole time and stay relaxed.

You should now see that the solution starts to exit the opposite nostril. If it does not provide it with some time and if still it just isn't coming out move the top of your head back to the starting position and let the solution drain. Now try the other side.

Do each side twice or until the solution finishes.

How many times should I repeat this?

You should start out with one a day and then progress to two times a day (morning and evening).

For all things medical a Doctor really should be consulted first if you're unsure.

how to use a neti pot are frequently recommended by ENT specialists as well as those who are recoverying from Sinsus surgery, and Saline is FDA approved, so this is considered a safe practice, but we don't know your particular circumstances so a specialist really should be consulted if you're unsure. It's also not suggested to try to use a Neti Pot against younger children without seeking professional guidance first.

And finally, remember it truly is essential to only use sterilized or boiled water, do not use untreated water
